History and Concept of IMC, Ltd.
IMC was founded in 1998 by David Smith, the former manager of SMCO’s Hull Claims department.
David assembled a first class team of H&M and P&I specialists with diverse backgrounds,
strategically located around the US and Canadian coastline. The concept was to create a small but highly
efficient organization, staffed by claim professionals and marine surveyors and consultants
of the highest caliber experienced in and dedicated to handling both H&M and P&I work.

With well over 100 years of combined seagoing, claims, and technical experience, IMC is
uniquely positioned to provide an effective and practical response to a wide range of
maritime problems. In concert with our established network of highly competent marine
surveyors, experts and consultants, we can promptly provide a cost-effective response to
a request for assistance virtually anywhere in the U.S., Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean.
Our staff are also available to respond to casualties, or requests for assistance, on a
worldwide basis. IMC also enjoys a harmonious working relationship with the U.S. Coast
Guard, other federal authorities, and admiralty law firms throughout North America.
Because of our ability to provide rapid response when an incident occurs, no matter how
large or small, we are able to minimize the overall exposure and resolve claims in a
prompt and cost-effective manner.
Since we provide a wide range of survey, technical and claims handling services to both
H&M and P&I underwriters we understand the important issues and the need for effective
information gathering and coordination between the parties on key decisions.
